How To Start When You Don’t Know Where To Start

Of course wondering where to start is always a concern when you want something…or else you would have it already! When it comes to fitness and a healthy lifestyle, there are three things that need to be the focus of change: mentality, eating, and workouts.

Mentality is one of the most important aspects. Narrow down why you want to get started. When you have clearer goals, they become more achievable.

DO:

  • You need to work out for the right reasons. Do it for yourself. Your reason for working out should be that you want to be healthier and stronger. Being stronger helps with you operating more efficiently on a day to day basis. If you are an athlete, you will be better at your sport. If you are a runner, you will run faster and have a better recovery. The benefits go on!

  • Be okay with failure and trial and error. This is going to happen a lot and you are just going to have to accept it! Period! You are going to have to be strong enough to get up and start again so be prepared.

DON’T:

  • Do not work out to have a certain body type. That will come as a “side effect” of working out for the good reasons.

  • Do not work out with the expectation of having immediate results.

There is no quick fix and you will be setting yourself up for failure if you work out with the mindset of having quick noticeable results. That brings us back to the first mentality that you should be working out to just be a better version of you…everything will come afterwards!

This took years of starting over again and again. It also took a while for me to figure out that progress can be shown over time.

The way you eat is so important to your health success. This can either make you or break you. First off, it needs to be a lifestyle. NOT A DIET. This is not a temporary way to eat. Diets are temporary. That is why there is no cookie cutter way for what is best for you, because everyone is different. But there are ways to make it easier.

  • The macro system is a good way to eat what you want. The con is that everything needs to be measured with exact amounts. Also, this method can limit you to only one meal a day, if not planned carefully.

  • Straight up clean foods and no sugar or complex carbs is the most effective way and leaves no room for error. The cheat days can be where you mess up, though. Your self-control needs to be superb because often, cheats meals turn into cheat days. And all the calories that you didn’t consume throughout the week can be consumed during that one cheat meal/day so you won’t see results.

Meal prepping can help you stay on point with your eating goals!

Either way you spin it, the common goal of any way you eat is to have a calorie deficit. A calorie deficit leads to fat loss. AND LOOK AT THAT. GREAT SEGWAY INTO THE LAST FOCUS OF CHANGE! Working out!

Working out is another way to achieve a calorie deficit. So basically, you can eat pretty normally, but you need to just workout harder to burn more calories than you are consuming (which is basically more work and not always healthy so this is not really recommended). The perfect balance is clean eating and working out.

When it comes to workouts, do what you like!

  • If you play a sport, join a team or practice those drills.

  • If you like to run, set new running goals for yourself. Incorporate sprints into your running regimen.

  • If you are a dancer, take some dance or a variation of “Zumba” classes.

  • A key to seeing results is to add weightlifting or high intensity interval training (HIIT) to your plan so you can build more muscle.

The more muscle you have, the more you burn calories…even at a resting state! This is the hardest part, but there are so many resources and apps that can help with this. It isn’t going to be an easy start, but classes with a group setting are encouraged until you get the hang of it! That way, you are being encouraged, motivated, and held accountable by the people around you.

If you aren’t being challenged, you aren’t going to see results. Challenge yourself. And most importantly love yourself. You won’t see any results if you have a negative mindset about your life or body.
